To study in Italy you will need a visa and the process to apply for the same differs from country to country. Below is a general process that is more relevant to Indian students.

  • 1. You need to apply for a visa through an Italian embassy closest to your residency.
  • 2. Start your visa application as early as possible as it may take up to 3 months for your visa to be granted.
  • 3. Your passport must not be more than 10 years old and must be valid for at least 3 months more than the duration of the visa applying for.
  • 4. Once all your documents are ready you can ‘book an appointment’ at a visa application centre and visit the centre on the date of appointment to submit your documents and get your biometrics done.
  • 5. You also need to pay a visa fee which can be done at the centre itself.
  • 6. Once a decision has been made on your application, you can either collect your passport from the visa application centre or get it couriered to you.

How to Apply:

  • 1. Apply at "Studenti Online" Portal (www.studenti.unibo.it) using SPID or CIE (electronic identity card) credentials. The system will automatically retrieve your personal details and it will create your University credentials (nome.cognome@studio.unibo.it). Minors or international students without an ID issued in Italy may log in with their University username and password. To obtain them, go on www.studenti.unibo.it and click “Register” and then “International students’ registration”. It is essential that you enter your details (name, surname, date and place of birth) accurately on www.studenti.unibo.it, as they must match those entered on www.cisiaonline.it in order for your name to be included in the ranking list.
  • 2. Register for the intake

o Click on “Admission application – Take part in the selection”.

o Select “First cycle degree programme”.

o Choose the course named “Economics of Tourism and Cities”.

Working in Italy while studying

• As a student in Italy, you are allowed to work part-time.

• You can work part-time up to 20 hours per week during your studies and full-time during vacations.

• You need to obtain a temporary residence permit though.

Working in Italy after completing your studies

• As a Non-EU student, if you want to work in Italy after graduation, you will need a work permit.

• You can stay back in Italy for 12 months after completing your masters or PhD degree.

• You can apply for a post-study work permit only once you get a full-time job or an intership opportunity

• Your employer needs to apply for a work permit for you termed as 'Nulla osta al lavoro'

• Once the employer received the work permit, the student can proceed with his application for post-study work visa.

• Once you recieve your post-study work visa, only then you can apply for a residence permit.

• Generally any student holding a residence permit while studying and working part-time is bound to get a residence permit to work full-time in Italy

Getting a PR in Italy

Non-EU nationals who already hold a temporary residence permit can apply for a permanent residence permit if they fulfill the following requirements:

• To be able to apply for a PR in Italy you should have spent at least 5 years

• You should be working full-time with an Italian employer and should be required to stay in Italy.
